Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences or NIMS University, Hyderabad is a State University specialising in offering medical education. The Autonomous University in Hyderabad has two campuses, one in Punjagutta and second in Bibinagar. The institute is situated in Punjagutta area at the prime centre of the twin cities and spread over an area of about 23 acres (93,000 m2). It has a constructed area of more than six lakh sq.ft. NIMS University, Hyderabad is recognized by Medical Council of India. The origin of the Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences dates back to the year 22-12-1964 when the idea of establishing a hospital to cater to the needs of Orthopaedic patients was conceived by the Nizam Charitable Trust (NCT) with an initial investment of Rs.55/- lakhs. The foundation stone was laid on 16th July 1961 by Sri Morarji Desai, Union Minister for Finance and the Building was inaugurated on 22-12-1974 by Sri. S.K. Patil, Union Minister for Railways and Declared open by her Highness the princess of Bearer. This hospital was handed over by the NCT to the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh for the term of 99 years on 13-2-1976 with a view to developing other specialities. The hospital was renamed as Nizam's Institute of Orthopaedics and Specialities (NIOS). It was inaugurated by Sri Jalagam Vengala Rao, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on 31 March 1976.

The Govt. founded the Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS) on 11 March 1980 as an autonomous body registered under A.P. Public Societies Registration Act. This was inaugurated by Marri Chenna Reddy, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh on 17 March 1980. As there was no development to the expected level in the specialities, the Govt. of Andhra Pradesh transferred the NIOS to IMS under A.P (Telangana Area) Public Societies Registration Act on 25-3-1986.
